Introduction

Pentaerythritol, formula C5H12O4, is organic compound having neopentane as backbone. Generally, Pentaerythritol is a polyhydric alcohol with four hydroxyl group attached at corner of chain. Pentaerythritol is a typical neopentyl quaternary alcohol that formed by the condensation of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. It is also known as tetramethylol methane.

Pentaerythritol is a white crystalline powder that mainly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, glycerol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, and petroleum ether, among others. Pentaerythritol has typical chemical properties of polyols owing to which it can be used in reactions such as oxidation, nitration, halogenation and etherification wherein polyols plays vital part.

Depend upon the contents and composition, industrial grade pentaerythritol are available in four main category; Mono-pentaerythritol (wt. fraction 87%-90%), mono-pentaerythritol (>98%), Di- pentaerythritol and tertiary pentaerythritol. In Industry, each type of pentaerythritol compound have different set of applications. For Instance, mono-pentaerythritol is mainly used in the production of alkyd resins, fatty acid esters for the synthesis of lubricating oils & their additives, tallow oil esters initiators for the production of polyether polyols and polyester polyols production, among others.

Moreover, Di- pentaerythritol is used for the production of fire retardant coatings and high-grade lubricants for automobiles. It is generally believed that the di and tertiary pentaerythritol are among the higher grade products that are prevalently used for the synthesis of high-grade paints and lubricants.
