Cyclopentanone (CAS No: 120-92-3) is a cyclic ketone with a molecular formula C5H8O. It is also referred to as ketocyclopentane or adipic ketone. This clear, colourless organic compound is obtained by ketonization of adipic acid in presence of barium hydroxide at elevated temperatures.

Cyclopentanone is a flammable organic compound characterized by a strong petroleum-like, ethereal odour. It is relatively stable and is insoluble in water. Commercially, one of the major application areas for Cyclopentanone is as an aroma chemical in the perfumes industry.

Moreover, Cyclopentanone also finds application as an intermediate in manufacture of a variety of chemicals.
