Slimicides Market Projected Growth Rate (2022-2032) |
3% to 4% CAGR |
Slimicides, also known as antislime agents, are antimicrobial chemical agents used for eliminating microorganisms that produce slimes, such as algae, bacteria, slime, and fungi. These chemical agents are extensively used in the papermaking processes as a large amount of water is recirculated and numerous paper-making chemicals are added during the process of papermaking for improving the process productivity and quality of papers.
The pH level, the temperature of the recirculating water, and environmental conditions of the reused water are appropriate for the growth of slime-making bacteria and other microorganisms. Holes and breaks in the network of paper fibers or web, produced by slime lumps, can impact the overall quality of papers and their finishing. Slime can also lead to nozzle blocks and pipe clogging, causing sudden shutdowns and production breakdowns.
As slimicides assist in the halting the formation of slime during paper-making processes, declining in occasional production breakdown along with energy and time wastage, they are increasingly gaining popularity in the paper industry.
Slimicides are a type of biocide of various chemical origins, including aldehydes, bromium, quaternary ammonium organic sulfur, and other compounds. As the paper is manufactured under alkaline or acidic conditions, novel slimicides are being formulated with such expertise that they are compatible with several papermaking additives and able to function over a wide pH range. Thus, increasing emphasis on the introduction of novel slimicides is estimated to favor the growth in the global market.
Rising concerns pertaining to environmental sustainability and growing inclination toward the use of eco-friendly & biodegradable packaging solutions are creating strong demand for paper-based packaging solutions such as paper composite fiberboard, cardboard, corrugated boxes, and others.
Also, governments of several countries are implementing numerous stringent regulations and standards regarding the use of plastics, accelerating the demand for paper-based packaging solutions. For instance, the Indian Government announced imposing a ban on the use of single-use plastic, including polystyrene, and expanded polystyrene commodities under the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021.
Such regulations and developments increase the adoption of paper packaging across industries in food & beverages, bakery, confectionery, personal care & cosmetics, and others, thereby boosting the demand for papers. As slimicides in extensively used in the manufacturing of papers and paper-based products, this rapid expansion of the paper industry is projected to augment the sales in the global market.
In addition to this, increasing research & development activities in the field of biocides for the introduction of slimicides that are less harmful to the environment is anticipated to bolster the growth in the market over the coming years.

Growing environmental concerns regarding water pollution due to wastewater and other effluents from the paper industry are anticipated to be a restraining factor for the slimicides market growth.
The paper industry consumes a large amount of wood for pulp formation during papermaking. Several organizations and governments worldwide are implementing strict norms and regulations pertaining to tree cutting such as the Wilderness Act and the National Environmental Policy Act in the U.S. This is estimated to hamper the paper production, thereby, hindering the sales of slimicides in the global market.
FMI states that Asia Pacific excluding Japan is expected to register the fastest growth in the global slimicides market from 2022 to 2032.
Increasing vehicles fleet and rapid industrialization across Asia Pacific have resulted in boosting the demand for crude oil and petroleum products. Hence, governments in the regional countres are focusing on making huge investments to increase the production and extraction of oil & gas, creating strong demand for extraction chemicals.
For instance, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation, the Government of India has announced its plan to invest nearly 102.4 Bn for developing oil & gas infrastructure to increase the production and extraction of crude oil and petroleum products. As slimicides are used in the oil extraction process, a multiplicity of such developments are projected to bolster the sales in the Asia Pacific excluding Japan market.
As per Future Market Insights, North America is estimated to account for a significant share in the global slimicides market over the forecast period 2022-2032.
With rising shift towards the adoption of paper-based products, owing to the growing awareness regarding the use of other non-biodegradable products is favoring the paper industry in North America. Citing this trend, a number of prominent paper manufacturers are emphasizing on expanding their production capacity.
For instance, in 2019, Kimberly-Clark Corp, an American multinational paper-based consumer products manufacturer announced its plan of investing US$ 120 Mn for the expansion of its tissue paper mill in Oklahoma, the U.S. to increase the production capacity of toilet paper and bath tissue. Such developments are estimated to accelerate the demand for slimicides in the North America market.
Some of the leading players in the slimicides market are the Dow Chemical Company, Parchem fine & specialty chemicals, Watch Water GmbH, LANXESS, BASF, Lonza Group Ltd, Auchtel Product Limited, Vink Chemicals GmbH & Co. KG, INTACE, Albemarle Corporation, Superior Plus Corp., Finor, Calgon Bio-Organics Pvt Ltd, and others.
Key players in the global market are focusing at launching more sustainable products and mergers & coloration with end use companies to gain edge in the highly competitive market.
