Key Players
Competitive Landscape
Railway ministries, freight car lessors and train builders award wheel and axle contracts after load, fatigue and ultrasonic tests, and a supplier stays on a fleet for decades once approved. The Ministry of Railways ordered 9,000 LHB axles from Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory in September 2025.[3] Forgers in India are competing for a larger share of growth by adding capacity for export as well as home demand.
Freight car builders in North America face margin pressure, and Greenbrier now guides fiscal 2026 gross margin at 13.8% to 14.2%, down from 14.8% to 15.2%.[6] Passenger builders hold deep backlogs, with €102.8 billion at Alstom and CHF 33,269 million at Stadler.[5][1] Wheel suppliers to passenger builders will see steadier volume than suppliers to freight car builders over 2026 and 2027.

Wabtec reported Freight components sales of USD 398 million for April to June 2026, against USD 401 million a year before.[7] Demand for OEM components in North American freight is flat as a result of slower car builds. Wheel makers will look to passenger fleets in Germany and India for new volume until freight car orders recover.
Who leads the railway rolling stock market?
Backlogs decide leadership in wheel and axle buying. Wabtec reported a multi-year backlog of USD 30,932 million on 30 June 2026, and Alstom held €102.8 billion of backlog at the same date.[7][5]
Which companies have documented positions?
Greenbrier reported a backlog of 13,800 railcars at 31 May 2026.[6] Jupiter Wagons delivers 10,000 wheelsets per year from Aurangabad.[3]
What should buyers evaluate before approving a supplier?
Railway buyers check fatigue test results, ultrasonic inspection records, steel grade and wheel profile against the fleet standard. Indian Railways buyers also weigh domestic forging capacity, such as the 10,000 wheelsets per year delivered from the Aurangabad facility of Jupiter Wagons.[3]
How is competition expected to change through 2036?
Indian forgers will quote against European and Chinese wheel makers in EU tenders from 2027. North American suppliers will compete on repair shop pricing until the 23,427-car freight backlog of June 2026 grows again.
