Fly Ash Market Overview
Fly ash is the finely divided residue obtained as a by-product from the combustion of pulverized coal in electric power generation plants. Fly ash can be produced by coal-fired electric and steam generating plants.
Fly Ash can be classified into two types, class F and class C depending on its content and resistance to chemical attack. In production of fly ash, coal is pulverized and blown with air into the boiler's combustion chamber where it is ignited and heated to produce molten mineral residues.
The residues are cooled by using boiler tubes that extract heat from the boiler to harden the residue and form ash. Coarse ash or bottom ash is found in the bottom of the combustion chamber, while the lighter fine ash particles also known as fly ash is suspended in the flue gas.
Before exhausting flue gas, fly ash is removed with particulate emission control devices including electrostatic precipitators or filter fabric bag-houses.
Fly ash is used in various highway engineering applications such as portland cement concrete, flowable fills, asphalt fillers, structural & flowable fills, grouts and soil & road base stabilization.
Particle size distribution and spherical shape and of fly ash improves the fluidity of flowable fill and grout and makes it a good mineral filler in hot mix asphalt applications.
This consistency and abundance availability of fly ash across the globe creates unique opportunities for its use in structural fills and other highway applications.
Global Fly Ash Market: Dynamics
Fly ash is a source of nutrients to soil and can improve biological properties of degraded soil. Since the past few years, population growth has been translating to a decline in farmland area with increasing urbanization and industrialization due to which it is essential to increase the crop yield.
This in turn promotes the use of fly ash in most agrarian countries. Growing population is projected to significantly increase the need for infrastructural and residential development which is expected to positively impact the fly ash market in upcoming future.
Increasing investment in construction in developing and least developed countries is further expected to bolster the fly ash market during forecast period.
Lack of cognizance on benefits of use of fly ash brick in rural areas is projected to hinder the global fly ash market. Moreover, stringent regulatory processes delaying the construction activities is further anticipated to restrain the growth of fly ash.
The construction industry has been impacted severely by the ongoing pandemic (Covid-19) crisis with the major construction project are delayed in most of the regions while some are cancelled.
The potential impacts of COVID-19, including shortage of subcontractors and materials, supply chains disruption, and the termination of contracts to control expenses.
Though the market has experienced negative growth in the initial quarters of current fiscal; it is however expected to gain traction within next 4-6 quarters with resumption of construction activities and generation of subsequent demand of construction materials including fly ash.
Global Fly Ash Market: Regional Outlook
Asia Pacific region holds the prominent share of global fly ash market backed by ongoing developments and increasing investments in construction activities in countries such as China and India.
Infrastructural developments in these countries have the utmost potential and is expected to grow at significant rate in foreseeable future.
North America followed after Asia Pacific holds the second position in terms of consumption of fly ash. Increasing industrialization in U.S. is the major factor in the growth of fly ash market in the region.
Europe is expected to witness comparatively steady growth for construction activities and thereby for fly ash demand. Least developed countries form Latin America and Middle East & Africa can be the future potential market for fly ash.
