Sperm Density Testing Market Snapshot (2023 to 2033)

The global sperm density testing market is forecast to be valued at US$ 990 million in 2023, and will likely expand at a CAGR of 6% until 2033, as per a recently published market research report by Future Market Insights. According to the study, the market for sperm density testing is further poised to reach US$ 1,733 million by the end of the 2023-2033 period of assessment. The need for sperm density testing has been accentuated by the prevalence of highly sedentary lifestyles, leading to mounting infertility problems among men.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 9% of men aged 15 to 44 suffer from infertility. Overall, across all age groups, the incidence rate is as high as 30%. Infertility causes substantial psychological and social distress and imposes a considerable economic burden on patients and healthcare systems. Hence, early diagnosis and treatment are of utmost importance. Male infertility is increasingly recognized as a marker for overall male health. It has been associated with premature deaths, cancer, and other comorbid medical conditions.

Male infertility is of two types- the first includes problems with the actual process of sexual intercourse, while the second includes problems with the sperm. In the latter case, the key culprits involve obesity, smoking or tobacco ingestion, excessive alcohol consumption, wearing tight-fitting underwear, consumption of anabolic steroids, vasectomies, and consumption of recreational drugs.

The problem is especially overt across the developed world, which is why a majority of growth opportunities for key treatment providers are likely to set up bases across Europe and North America. A study presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) summit in 2018 revealed that the percentage of nearly 120,000 male infertility patients whose total motile sperm count numbered more than 15 million, decreased from 85% in the period ranging from 2002 to 2005 to 79% in the period of 2014 to 2017. Furthermore, it is apprehended that most men in the United States and Europe could be infertile by 2060.

Realizing the magnitude of the problem, governments are actively promoting awareness campaigns, undertaking extensive research studies, and sanctioning breakthrough therapies and treatment approaches to ascertain sperm density. In 2017, California-based Sandstone Diagnostics introduced the Trak Male Fertility Testing System, an FDA-approved device that uses centrifugal force to separate and quantify sperm cells. The at-home testing device gives men the opportunity to check their sperm count and improve reproductive health. Trak comes with 4 test packets, and two-pack refills are also available for purchase. Through the Trak app, men can log their results and track their progress over time.

Likewise, ExSeed Health offers sperm test kits for home use. The test provides results within a time span of 15 minutes, is more than 95% accurate, with a CE certification, helps improve sperm count with a personalized in-app program, and poses no risk of sample damage on the way to the lab. The test is W.H.O certified and used advanced fertility technology to determine the sperm count and suggest measures. In addition, the device allows for the sperm to be magnified 200x using the smartphone camera and see more accurate results.

Medical Electronics System is yet another player, offering the QwikCheckTM Semen Analysis Test Kits, a 3-level quality control material for use in automated and manual sperm counting systems. The beads it offers are for in-vitro use only, and can be used to assess the accuracy and precision of the laboratory’s sperm-counting methods by providing a new target value.
